Birch was born in London -her Italian mother was ‘liberated’ in
the second world war by her English father. Bilingual roots have ensured an
international flavour to her work including periods in Italy, Russia and
Jamaica, links with the USA and other states. Trained at the Royal Free and St
George’s, interest in youth arose when she set up advice clinics for schools.
Absence of training in Adolescent health in UK motivated a ‘personal’
programme which began in paediatrics and continued into sexuality and
psychotherapy. Dissatisfaction with statutory services led to founding Youth
Support, she now works solely for the Charity. Major aspects are Court work,
child protection, family assessment. She has wide experience of helping
disordered families, alcohol and substance abuse and is known for her research
in early parenthood. She has written several books - “Are you my sister, Mummy?”
school age pregnancy - “The child that rocks the cradle” long term results -
“Bonds and boundaries” - child protection in the family- “Inner Worlds” on
emotional issues. Interests include
drama and animal therapies so Youth Support branched into a mini farm and pet
shop. Animals play a major part in her life she is never without a Great Dane
having bred dogs for many years. Wider interests include music and Judo. She has
an actress daughter and a musician son.
